Mag G-oty

So the fun thing about fruits are wonderful little things called fruit flies.

Can we get a close up of that, Jim?

Great, that'll do.

So the fun thing about fruit flies is they like fruit, but they also like to reproduce in fruit. We have fruit.

Imagine that, we have lots of fruit flies buzzing around. Maryl's fine with them, she grew up with them apparently. So did I! Yet they still buzz around and are annoying. Especially in quantities greater than 30.

What to do? Well, Maryl is moderately sympathetic to my crazy small-bug neurosis, and had a solution. A fruit fly trap.

Can we get a close up of that Jim? Jim? Are you alive?

It looks a bit like that. You take a container - usually something you want to just throw away. I used a big juice container. Cover it with plastic wrap, poke tiny holes in it with a pencil, and voila, a fruit fly trap. Well, you have to bait it with some fresh fruit - good thing we have lots of strawberries!

The idea is that the fruit flies smell the fruit, fly into the small hole, but miraculously can't fly back OUT the hole they came in. One of life's little mysteries. Though, I saw one or two of our magicians manifest destiny.

It worked like a charm. Within a day we had half of them, and another day had most of them, and a few more days to get almost the entire lot. But on that last, beautiful day, another miracle occurred: fruit fly maggots.

Can we get a close up of that Jim? Jim, are you there?

These little beauties have the magical ability to crawl through tiny holes in plastic wrap. Imagine my surprise when a giant mug full of fruit flies turned into a giant mug full of maggots trying to worm their way, half way, half out of our home brewed fruit fly trap.

Isn't life precious? :)

Maryl:

How many times do I have to tell you?

Just be quiet and eat your maggots.
